A Day at The Bench

What a First Class Actually Looks Like


We've talked about why hands-on learning matters, about the importance of struggle, and about how it builds confidence. But those are ideas. Here's what that looks like in a 90-minute intro class.


This is based on a composite, drawn from many real intro classes we've run — but every moment in it happens just like this.


Before They Even Pick Up a Tool


Maya arrives early. She waits with the other new kids in the front area — nobody goes into the shop space until everyone can go together. When the group is complete, I introduce myself and walk them to the shop entrance.


Just inside the door to the shop is the prep area. This is where every class starts, every time: an apron, a pair of safety glasses, and a moment — just a few seconds — to get ready. Some kids fidget through this, but Maya does as I have asked. Later, I will explain to all of them the why of it.


Then I invite them in. Hands to themselves, they are welcome to move around and take in the room: the benches, the tool walls, and Big Bench, central place for our group meetings and demos. I catch Maya's eye, as she reaches to touch one of the tools, and give a small shake of my head. She pulls her hand back.


The Most Important Tool in the Room


Once everyone's at a bench, we gather at Big Bench for the first real conversation of the day: what keeps the shop safe?


The answers come easily. Aprons. Glasses. Maybe gloves? All good answers. But what about the vises? The space between the benches? The students start to see that "safety" is more intentional than just gear, it's the whole space, designed with purpose.


Then the real question: what's the single most important safety tool in this room?

Nobody guesses it. I won't spoil it here, either — but Maya and the other students smile when they learn what it is and they don't forget it.


Talk with the Tools


The intro project is a sanding stick — simple, but every bit of it is real woodworking. At Big Bench, I show them a finished piece, as well as display a whiteboard drawing of the finished piece: dimensions, the layout for the handle and the lanyard hole.


I introduce the block plane the way I introduce every new tool: where the sharp edge is, how to hold it safely, how to stand and move to use it. But before I let them touch wood, I tell them something that won't make sense yet: the plane will talk to you. Your job is to listen.

Each student gets a rough block of wood — their "blank" — and heads to their own bench to square up the first edge.

This is where it stops being easy.


A block plane, used well, has a sound — a clean, continuous hiss as the blade shears through the grain. Used poorly, it stutters, catches, goes silent. It also has a certain feel: a smooth, even resistance when the sole is sitting flat, a jolt or a skate across the surface when it isn't. Maya's first few strokes are a struggle - the plane repeatedly skips, catches, does nothing. I don't step in.

A few minutes later, I introduce the try square, a small tool for checking whether an edge is straight and square. Maya checks hers. It's neither. But something starts to shift in how she's working — she's not just pushing the plane forward anymore, she's paying attention to what it's telling her through her hands and the sound of the cut, and she's adjusting because of it.

She tries again. Checks again. Several attempts later, the plane finally sits flat and glides the way it's supposed to — she feels it before she even checks with the square — a long, thin curl of wood spirals up out of the throat of the tool and drops onto the bench. Then comes the smile.

This is the whole reason we start kids on hand tools instead of power tools. A power tool does the work and mostly ignores what you're telling it. A hand tool is a dialogue — it responds to exactly how you hold it, how much pressure, what angle, and it tells you, instantly, through sound and feel as it moves across the wood, what’s working and what isn’t. Kids don't just learn the technique of a tool. They learn to use it by talking with it.


The Rest of the Build


From there, the shape of the class repeats: a quick demo at Big Bench, then time at their own bench to practice that step. Maya marks her final width with a marking gauge and planes to the line. She squares up the end of her blank on a shooting board. She lays out the handle and the lanyard hole from the whiteboard plan, shapes the handle  to her liking with a rasp, drills the hole with an old-fashioned egg-beater drill, and ties on a lanyard.


Nobody finishes at the same time, and that's fine. I congratulate Maya on her finished project; I hand her an older sanding stick— worn smooth from use — for the final step: to soften the edges of her own. It's a small detail, but it quietly tells her something: this is a real tool.


What They Actually Learned


We end class the way we started — together, at Big Bench. I ask the group three questions: What did you enjoy? What did you learn about woodworking? What did you learn about yourself?


The third question is the one that matters most, and it's the one kids answer most honestly. “I didn't think I could get it straight”, “I didn't give up”, “I'm better at this than I thought”.

That's the point. Not the sanding stick, but what it took to make it.
